“Forests and Korean Culture” has recently been published, in conjunction with the Publication Subsidy Program of the Korea Foundation. This book is based on Chun Young Woo’s thoughts about how the forests of Korea serve as a window of Korean culture. The original Korean edition, published in 1999 by Sumoon, has enjoyed noteworthy success, along with being designated an outstanding book by the Korea Publication Ethics Commission, Korean Publishers Cooperative, and Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In addition, a Japanese edition of the book was published by Kokushu in 2004.

In line with today’s Environmental Age, ever more people are paying close attention to forest areas, which serve as an essential aspect of the global ecosystem and the efforts to promote environmental protection. Indeed, the traditional wisdom and values associated with the need for people to live in harmony with the natural environment have gained renewed relevance among modern-day society. As such, the English-language edition is intended to provide readers abroad with a unique glimpse into the culture of Korea through the Korean people’s reverence for their forests and natural surroundings.

“Forests and Korean Culture” includes sections on the themes of Forest, the Source of National Sentiments; Forest, the Hidden Hero and Foundation of Civilization; Forest, the Culturally Sustainable Environment; and Forest, the Face of Our Land.
