The Korea Foundation and the Brasil Cultural Center in Korea invite you to attend a special lecture that is being presented on May 13, 2016 (Friday) at 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Seminar Room of the KF Global Center.

The guest speaker, Professor Idelber Avelar, will give a lecture on the theme: “Brazilian’s Nationality and Popular Music.”

These days, Brazil has been in the international spotlight for being the host country of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, along with being one of the representative nations of South America. The Brazilian people are known for their exceptional ability in soccer as well as their musical talent, as evidenced by the long list of well-known artists from Brazil. In particular, Brazil’s popular music has long been closely associated with the Brazilian people’s nationality.

This special lecture will delve into the relationship between Brazil’s popular music and the Brazilian people. Anyone with an interest in Brazil’s pop music and its culture is welcome to attend the lecture.

Theme: Brazilian’s Nationality and Popular Music since 1960

From the emergence of Samba in the 20th century to the Forró music of 1940 and Funk and Hip-Hop in 1990, Brazil’s popular music is continuously evolving and shaping the Brazilian people’s nationality. This lecture will discuss the relationship between Brazilians’ nationality and their music from 1960, a period of political turmoil, through 1990, when the new youth genres of Hip-hop and Funk appeared.

Lecturer: Idelber Avelar, Professor, Portuguese and Spanish, Tulane University

Idelber Avelar Professor Idelber Avelar is a scholar of Brazil who earned his doctorate degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Duke University. In the course of his studies, he has acquired fluency in seven languages. He has received prestigious awards from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MLA Kovacs for his expertise in the field of Latin American Studies. Of note, Prof. Avelar was only 30 years of age when he was awarded the MLA Kovacs. Celebrated scholars of Latin America Studies, Walter Mignolo and Jon Beverley, have highly praised Prof. Avelar’s academic scholarship.
