[Review] 2019 KF Global e-School in Latin America Offline Workshop and CDC Meeting

On February 25–27, the eighth annual offline workshop of the KF Global e-School in Latin America and the Curriculum Development Committee (CDC) Meeting were successfully held at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León in Monterrey, Mexico, sponsored by the KF. Each of the sessions was filled with enthusiastic participants, reflecting ever-mounting interest in Korea and increasing demand for Korean studies courses in Central and South America.
The students who attended the workshop as “Excellent Students of 2018” were able to meet Korean studies professors whom they previously had seen only via video and attend their lectures in the flesh. They also had time to meet specialists in their areas of interest as well as fellow students from neighboring countries.
The workshop participants were divided into three groups and obtained advanced knowledge about Korea during discussions in which e-School professors played the role of panelists. The students showed particular interest in special lectures conducted by Korea experts from Central and South America, covering such subjects as history, economics, and culture, prolonging the question and answer sessions with their enthusiastic response.
Latin American scholars who attended the workshop served as the guides for next-generation Korean studies majors, discussing the papers presented by the students. Though their time together was limited, the professors and students made the most of the rare opportunity to gather and network in person rather than through video stream.
Of course this annual KF Global e-School event represented more than just a simple get-together. One student made the journey all the way from Patagonia, the southernmost tip of South America, while a Peruvian student had to acquire a passport for the first time to attend. With this impressive ability to unite promising young scholars from across the continent, the KF Global e-School in Latin America will continue to serve as a channel of communication and exchange while promoting understanding of Korea in the region.
