The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs surveyed people from 16 major cities around the world in the 2020 Survey of Overseas Korean Food Consumers, and the results are in — and interesting.
The number of people who reported knowing about hansik, or Korean food, stood at 57.4 percent of the survey participants, up 2.8 percentage points from the previous year. The amount of people who reported enjoying Korean food was 81.3 percent, 0.1 percentage point higher than the year before.
Among those who have tried Korean food, the top choice for most frequently eaten was kimchi with 33.6 percent of participants choosing the dish, beating out bibimbap at 27.8 percent and Korean-style fried chicken at 26.9 percent. Kimchi seems to have gained popularity worldwide as the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increased interest in health, and the time-honored Korean pickle is known as a healthy food.
When it came to the most preferred dish, Korean-style fried chicken was the top choice with 13.3 percent of participants selecting it, followed by kimchi at 11.9 percent and bibimbap at 10.3 percent.
