Support for Korean Studies Programs and Research Institutes Overseas

To promote Korean Studies and Korea-related academic activities abroad, the Foundation provides support to overseas universities, academic associations, research institutes and international exchange organizations for their Korea-related research, conferences, publications and other various programs.

Support for Participation in Overseas Events

The Foundation provided support to Korean scholars and specialists to attend four international events. Prof. Jung Dong-hyun of Pusan National University participated at the international academic conference, “Korea and the 21C,” held at Delhi University, India.

Support for International Conferences

The Foundation provided support to the 2004 international symposium on the history and culture of Goguryeo, held at Seoul Museum of History on March 26 and 27. The symposium was organized by the Society for Korean Ancient History, with the participation of 13 scholars from Japan, Russia, and the United States.

Support for the New Zealand International Arts Festival

The Foundation provided support for the 11th New Zealand International Arts Festival, held in Wellington from February 27 to March 21. This Festival was first held in 1986 and has been held every two years in February or March, lasting about three weeks. At this year’s Festival, two Korean performance groups, Nanta and Deulsori, attracted 20,000 spectators during their 16 performances. Major local newspapers and broadcasters covered these Korean cultural performances.

Korean Treasures from the Birmingham Museum

The Foundation provided support for the special exhibition, “From the Land of Morning Calm: Korean Treasures from the Birmingham Museum,” at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, Atlanta, from March 20 to April 22. This exhibition was part of a cultural event called Global Ambitions: Art, Culture and National Identity in South Korea, organized by Atlanta College of Art. At this exhibition, 24 relics owned by the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama were displayed, showing the beauty of Korea’s traditional art.

Korea-Japan National Theater Exchange Program

The Foundation provided support to the National Dance Company of Korea, performing Korea Fantasy at Tokyo National Theater, Japan, from April 9 to 10. This performance was part of the 2004 Korea-Japan National Theater Performance Exchange Program, ranging in a variety of traditional dances including circle dance (ganggangsullae), drum dance (janggo-chum), scarf dance (salpuri-chum) and sword dance (geommu).

Korean Touring Performance in Zimbabwe and Turkey

A series of musical performances were presented in Zimbabwe and Turkey from April 29 to May 4, by a group of traditional and contemporary musicians, under the joint auspices of the Korea Foundation and the Korean Embassies to Zimbabwe and Turkey. The program included samulnori (performed by the music group, Molgae), haegeum sanjo (Kang Eun-ill), pansori (Seo Jung-kum), free jazz (Park Je-chun & Miyeon Duo) and sinawi. The performance in Zimbabwe was part of the Harare International Festival of the Arts, which was held on April 29 in Harare. The performances in Turkey were held on May 3 at Istanbul and on May 4 at Ankara.

Scholarships and Fellowships

In the first semester of 2004, the Foundation extended scholarships to three universities in Korea (13 students at Seoul National University, nine students at Yonsei University, seven students at Korea University) in an effort to foster next-generation scholars of Korean Studies. Furthermore, as of the end of April, 21 foreign scholars and professional researchers from 12 countries are in Korea conducting research under the Fellowship for Field Research Program. Also, 69 Korean language teachers, scholars and graduate students from 31 countries are currently participating in the Fellowship for Korean Language Training Program.
