Asia House "Korean Spring 05"
With support from the Foundation, the U.K.-based nonprofit organization Asia House held "Korea Spring 05"(May 19 to July 13) to introduce Korean culture to British audiences. The festival events, held at the Korean Exhibition Hall at the British Museum and the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Hall, included performances and lectures on Korean music, a Korean food fair, and discussion session with Korean theatre producer Oh Tae-Suk, which allowed the participants to get a sampling of Korean culture. In addition, Korean theatre producer Oh Tae-Suk was invited by the renowned British drama school Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) to present a lecture on Korean drama to its students.

Next-Generation Leaders' Visit to Korea: Southeast and Southwest Asia
The Foundation hosted the visit of diplomatic officials from Southeast and Southwest Asia under its Next-Generation Leaders?Visit to Korea Program. For one week (May 24-31), participants from seven countries, including India, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore, met with relevant organizations and professionals, and visited various cultural sites. In particular, the program provided an ideal opportunity to promote networking to facilitate exchanges between Korea and the countries of these regions.

Korean Pavilion Events at "Foire et Salons Nancy 2005"
Korean Crafts Artist Association (President: Lee Chil-yong) participated in ?oire et Salons Nancy 2005?(May 27 to June 6), with support from the Foundation. Events held at the Korean Pavilion at the Nancy International Exposition Hall included Korean arts and crafts exhibitions, traditional artwork displays, leather-brush calligraphy, and a tea ceremony demonstration.

Korean Contemporary Art Exhibition in Denmark
The Foundation extended assistance to the Korean contemporary art exhibition ?eoul: Until Now!?organized by Charlottenborg, the Danish royal academy of art. The exhibition was held from June 1 to August 24 at Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark, where 27 Korean contemporary artists displayed their works that portrayed Seoul? international character.

Korean Performing Art Troupe Tours Africa and Middle East
The Foundation sponsored the Korean music performance group ?orean Folk and Modern Sounds,?who presented seven performances in Africa and Middle East countries, including Libya, Malta, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, from June 5 to 20, to introduce Korean music to local audiences. The program, which consisted of samulnori, pansori, ajengsanjo, free music, and sinawi, provided an overview of Korean music from the past to the present day. Prominent traditional Korean musicians participated in the event, such as Pungmul-gut-pae Molgae (samulnori), Yum Kyung-ae (pansori), Lee Yeon-soon (ajeng-sanjo), and Meeyeon and Park Jae-Chun Duo (free music).

Pansori Performance Tour of Morocco and Tunisia
The Foundation dispatched pansori performer Yoo Miri and drummer Chung Joon-ho from the National Center for Traditional Korean Performance Arts to introduce pansori, which is registered as an International Cultural Heritage, to audiences and artists in Morocco and Tunisia (June 8-11). This duo also participated in the "Fez Festival of World Sacred Music" in Morocco with a performance of Heungboga, which was popular among the viewers and served to introduce Korea's unique form of traditional music.

The 10th Korea-China Forum for the Future
Together with the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, the Foundation co-hosted the 10th Korea-China Forum for the Future at Shinyang Park Hotel in Gwangju (June 13-14). A total of 32 specialists from the areas of politics and security, economy and trade, and society and culture of the two countries participated in this forum, which included in-depth discussions of "Political and Economic Situation of Korea and China","Peace on the Korean Peninsula and North Korean Nuclear Issues", "Economic Cooperation between Korea and China","Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia," and "Promoting Social and Cultural Exchanges between Korea and China."

3rd Korean Traditional Music Workshop for Overseas Musicologists
The Korea Foundation co-hosted the Korean Traditional Music Workshop for Overseas Musicologists, in cooperation with the National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts (NCKTPA), from June 13 to July 2, which included the participation of 19 ethnomusicologists and music professionals from seven countries. The workshop consisted of lectures and practical instruction on traditional Korean music held at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts in Seoul, along with a field trip to Jindo, Jeollanam-do Province. This workshop program is held biennially to promote research and education of traditional Korean music at universities and research institutes abroad. This is the third workshop session, following programs in 2001 and 2003.

Korea-Japan Year of Friendship Fashion Exhibition
Fashion art exhibition "Vision of the Body in Seoul," jointly organized by Korea and Japan, was presented at the Seoul Museum of Art from June 15 to July 31. This exhibition was co-organized by the Korea Foundation, Japan International Exchange Foundation, Seoul Museum of Art, and Kyoto Fashion Culture Foundation to celebrate Korea-Japan Year of Friendship 2005.

Korea Chamber Ensemble Tour of Europe
The Foundation sponsored the Korea Chamber Ensemble's tour of Europe, which included performances at Naantali, Finland, and Bad Burikenau and Rheingau, Germany (June 19-29). The ensemble (led by Professor Kim Min of Seoul National University's Music Department), which was established in 1965, participated in renowned international music festivals at Naantali and Rheingau to present Korea's excellence in chamber music to international audiences.

The 17th Korean Studies Workshop
The Foundation invited 43 intermediate school and high school teachers and authors of textbooks from the United States, Australia, and New Zealand to participate in the 17th Korean Studies Workshop, co-hosted by Korea University Graduate School of International Studies. During the two-week workshop (June 21 to July 6), participants attended lecture sessions on a wide range of issues, such as Korea? history, culture, politics, and economy, and had opportunities to gain firsthand experience about Korea through such activities as guest teaching at a Korean high school, temple stay program at Hwaeomsa Temple, and visiting cultural attractions in Gyeongju and Goryong.

Korea-Japan Friendship in Dance 2005
Together with the Japan Foundation, National Theatre of Korea, and Counseil International de la Danse (CID-UNESCO), the Foundation jointly organized "Korea-Japan Friendship in Dance 2005," which was presented at the National Theatre of Korea (June 25 to July 14). This dance exchange program featured two events: the Butoh Festival that focused on Butoh, a well-known form of Japanese avant-garde dance, and the Contemporary Dance Festival that presented works jointly produced by choreographers of modern dance from the two countries. Over 100 Korean and Japanese dance performers and 150 staff participated in this event, which not only served as a forum for exchange between dance artists but also a meaningful opportunity for the two countries to engage in cultural cooperation and to advance the internationalization of Asian culture.

The 6th Korea-France Forum
Together with L'institute Francais des Relations Internationale (IFRI), the Foundation co-hosted the 6th Korea-France Forum in France (June 27-28). A total of 39 representatives from Korea and France participated in this forum, which included the exchange ideas on such key issues as "Multilateral Dynamics for Solving North Korean Nuclear Issues," "The Future of Asia-Pacific Regional Architecture,""Economic Cooperation between Korea and France,""The European Union and Prospects of East Asian Integration,"and "Evaluation of the Bilateral Ties between Korea and France."

The 2nd Korea-Spain Forum
The Foundation and Casa Asia co-hosted the 2nd Korea-Spain Forum in Barcelona, Spain from June 30 to July 1. The participants included 26 delegates from Korea and Spain who engaged in in-depth discussions of such matters as ?tatus and Future Perspectives of Korea-Spain,"Korea-Spain Cultural Exchange Cooperation,"and "Status of Korea-Spain Bilateral Trade and Investment," in an effort to come up with ways to bolster cooperative relations between the two countries.

Workshop for Chinese Educators
The Foundation invited 22 Korean-language professors from Chinese universities, which maintain Korean Studies programs, to participate in a two-week workshop on Korean-language education and methodology held at Kyung Hee University Institute of International Education from July 11-22. During the workshop, a total of 25 lectures were presented, which covered such subjects as etymology, teaching materials, syntax, morphology, sentence structure, and educational curriculum. The program also included field visits to the Icheon ceramics village and Samsung Electronics.
This training program was initiated in 2003 and has been conducted annually. It is designed to strengthen the professional and educational capabilities of Korean-language professors in China, in an effort to effectively satisfy ever-growing demand for Korean-language education in China due to the rapidly increasing exchange and cooperation between the two countries

International Conference on Korean Musicology
Korean Traditional Music Association and International Council for Traditional Music, Korea Division, with support from the Korea Foundation, held the International Conference on Korean Musicology, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Korea's liberation, on July 2 at National Center for Korean Traditional Performance Arts.
Some 100 domestic and overseas scholars and graduate school students participated in the conference, which got underway with keynote speeches by Hanyang University professor Kwon Oh-Sung on "Exploring New Directions for Korean Musicology"and Maryland University professor Robert Provine's "The Future of Korean Traditional Music." A total of 11 papers and presentations in both English and Korean were delivered by musicologists from six countries, including presentations by professor Anderson Sutton of Madison University in the United States on "The Experimental Dimension of Korean Mixed Music" and by Pio En-Yu of China on Hwangung-ak.
Support for International Conferences
The Foundation supported seven international conferences, including the 9th International Cognitive Language Committee (ICLC2005) Seoul Conference, co-hosted by the Korea Discourse and Cognitive Linguistics Society (July 17-22).
The conference offered an opportunity for domestic cognitive language professionals to learn about the most recent theories and research in the field of cognitive language, and to introduce Korea and its culture to language specialists from around the world. Professor Goerge Lakoff of UC Berkeley, U.S.; Professor Guener Radden of Hamburg University, Germany; and Professor John Taylor of University of Otago, New Zealand were among the conference participants from 25 countries.

Invitation Program for Distinguished Individuals Overseas
The Foundation hosted the visits of Simar Samar, Representative of the Afghanistan Human Rights Committee, (July 17-23), and Joachim Schuring, Editor of Adventure Archeology magazine, from Germany (July 28 to August 8). During their stays, the two individuals met with relevant organizations and professionals in Seoul and other cities, and visited industrial and cultural sites.

The 3rd Future Leaders Forum: Korea-China-Japan 2005
In cooperation with the All-China Youth Federation and the Japan Foundation, the Foundation co-hosted the 3rd Future Leaders Forum: Korea-China-Japan, which was held in Beijing, Gifu (Nagoya), and Gwangju from July 17 to 27. Notable young representatives from the government, legislature, business, media, cultural, and academic spheres from the three countries participated in comprehensive and in-depth discussions on the theme of "Trilateral Cooperation toward Building a Northeast Asian Regional Community."

Next-Generation Leaders' Visit to Korea: Africa and Middle East
The Foundation sponsored the visit of government diplomatic officials from seven countries, including Libya, Kuwait, Morocco, and Egypt, from Africa and the Middle East regions under its Next Generation Leaders Visit to Korea Program (July 19-26).

Contemporary Korean Art Exhibition in the U.S.
The Foundation sponsored the ?orean Contemporary Art Now: Two Dimension and Three Dimension?exhibition held from July 23 to August 20, at the Culture Outlet in the SOHO district of New York, which presented the works of Korea? new generation of contemporary artists: Kwon Ki-soo, Roh Jae-un, and Jang Harry (Oasis Project). The exhibition featured two-dimensional works as well as three-dimensional works inspired by two-dimensional concepts.

Scholarships and Fellowships
The Foundation selected 20 graduate school students of Korean Studies from the North American region as scholarship recipients for the second half of 2005, together with the selection of 10 students from Western Europe and 19 students from Japan in the second quarter. In addition, 31 students studying in Korea (Seoul National University: 11, Yonsei University: 10, Korea University: 10), who were selected during the first half of this year, will continue to receive scholarship aid during the second half of 2005.
As of August 2005, 54 fellows from 31 countries were engaged in Korean language training, while 27 fellows from 17 countries were conducting research in Korea, under the Foundation's respective fellowship programs.
