Support for International Conferences
The Foundation provided support to six organizations for their international conferences held in November and December 2005, including: (1) "Towards a 21st Century Northeast Asian Community: Tasks of Korea and Japan" held by the Institute of Japanese Studies, Hallym University (November 5) in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, (2) "Portsmouth Treaty and the Past, Present and Future of Peace-Building in Northeast Asia" by Seoul ASEM Institute for International Relations (November 11-12), (3) APEC 2005 International Symposium "Towards a New Asian Order and Solidarity" by Hankyoreh Foundation for Reunification and Culture (November 12), (4) forum on the promotion of Northeast Asian history (November 5) and symposium on factors hindering mutual understanding between Korea and Japan (December 2) held by Korea-Japan Solidarity 21, (5) "Northeast Asian Cooperation and Political, Historical, and Legal Meaning of Dokdo Issue" by the Association of Korean Political and Diplomatic History (December 8-9), and (6) "Vision and Role for a Common House of Peace in East Asia" by Korea Peace Forum (December 10-11).

Invitation Program
The Foundation recently hosted the visits of several university presidents to Korea: the University of Madras (November 9-13) and the University of Mumbai (January 3-7, 2006) from India, and the State Islamic University of Indonesia (November 21-27). During their one-week stay in Korea, the visitors established friendship and cooperation with their Korean counterparts and enhanced their understanding about Korea through visits to Korea's leading universities to discuss cooperative efforts for academic exchange. They also had a chance to see various historic and cultural attractions and industries.

2nd Korea-Italy Forum
In conjunction with the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Korea, the Foundation jointly held the 2nd Korea-Italy Forum at the KF Cultural Center on November 11, 2005. The Korean and Italian representatives exchanged opinions on a comprehensive range of issues, such as recent trends of the two countries' society and culture, coordinated efforts to assure peace on the Korean peninsula, current economic situation and cooperative relations, current status of science and technology and ways to boost cooperation, and images of the two countries conveyed through the media and ways to enhance these images. In addition to the participants from the two countries, a group of about 60 observers attended the discussion sessions to acquire greater insight into the two countries.

Exhibition on Cubism in Celebration of Korea-Japan Friendship Year
The Foundation extended support to the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Deoksugung, for its exhibition "Cubism in Asia: Unbounded Dialogues," held from November 11, 2005 through January 30, 2006. The exhibition presented 113 Cubist works by 76 artists from 11 countries, including Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. Events held in conjunction with the exhibition included a symposium on 20th-century Asian art and an Asian movie festival. The exhibition served as a unique occasion to highlight Korean art influences on artistic trends in the Asian region.

Korean Speech Contest in Shandong Province, China
With the assistance of the Foundation, the 4th Korean Speech Contest, which included participants and an audience of about 300, was successfully conducted at Qufu Normal University, in China's Shandong Province, on November 12, 2005.

Visit of Next-Generation Leaders from Russia
The Foundation invited seven young leaders from Russia's government, academia, and other fields. During their stay in Korea, from November 14-20, 2005, they had an opportunity to develop network relations with their Korean counterparts and expand their understanding of Korea through visits to organizations of interest, like LG Electronics, Samsung Economic Research Institute, and the Ministry of Information and Communications, and tours of historical and cultural sites.

Forum on Examining New History Textbook
With support from the Foundation, Korea-Japan Solidarity 21 organized a forum to review a new history textbook jointly written by Korean, Chinese, and Japanese scholars, which is intended to serve as supplemental resource for history education. Professor Narita Ryuichi, a senior Japanese historian, was invited to the forum to discuss the textbook, entitled "History for Opening the Future," with Korean and Japanese scholars.

Contemporary Korean Art Exhibition in New Zealand
Under the sponsorship of the Foundation, an exhibition of contemporary Korean art, "The Alchemy of Daily Life," was presented at Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand. The exhibition, shown from November 18, 2005 through February 26, 2006, featured 30 artworks selected from those displayed at the exhibition of the same title organized by Korea's National Museum of Contemporary Art.

International Symposium on 'Asian Art in the 20th Century'
The Foundation and Korea's National Museum of Contemporary Art co-organized a symposium on 20th-century Asian art, which was held at the KF Cultural Center on November 19, 2005. Curators and scholars from six countries discussed the current status and future of Asian art at this symposium with some 180 people attending. This event was staged in conjunction with the exhibition, "Cubism in Asia: Unbounded Dialogues," shown at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Deoksugung.

Hwaum Chamber Orchestra Concert Tour of Japan
The Foundation and the Japan Foundation organized the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra's concert tour of Japan, in celebration of Korea-Japan Friendship Year. The chamber orchestra performed in Kobe on November 21 and in Tokyo on November 24, 2005.

Korea Week at University of Delhi, India
The Foundation provided support for the "Korea Week" activities organized by the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi, India, held from November 21-25, 2005. A variety of events, such as a performance of Heungbujeon, photo exhibition, and kimchi festival, were held with the participation of some 1,000 students and professors. The Korea Week served as a special occasion to introduce Korean culture to the people of India.

Visit of Next-Generation Leaders from CIS
The Foundation hosted the visit of ten government officials and diplomats from the CIS to Korea from November 21-27, 2005. The visitors, from the CIS countries of Tajikistan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Belarus, visited the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, the National Assembly, and the Ulsan production plant of Hyundai Motor, as well as various historic/cultural sites.

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference for UNESCO World Conference on Arts Education
The Foundation provided support for an Asia-Pacific regional conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, UNESCO, and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, held at the KF Cultural Center from November 23-25, 2005. About 80 related government officials and experts from the Asia and Pacific region discussed the current status and ways to further develop arts education, in preparation for the UNESCO World Conference on Arts Education to be held in Portugal in March 2006.

1st Korean Speech Contest in Romania
The Foundation extended support to the 1st Korean Speech Contest held at the Internet Access Plaza, University of Bucharest, Romania, on November 26, 2005, which included participants and an audience of about 100.

Korean Speech Contest in Bulgaria
The Foundation extended assistance to a Korean speech contest, which was co-hosted by Sofia University's Korean Studies Department and the Korean Embassy in Bulgaria, held at the Center for Oriental Languages and Cultures at Sofia University.

Korea-Austria Philharmonic Orchestra Concert in Austria
The Foundation provided support to the Korea-Austria Philharmonic Orchestra for its concert performances in St. P쉕ten (November 30) and Vienna (December 1, 2005). Composed of young Korean and Austrian musicians, the orchestra performed popular classical music works as well as Korean and Austrian compositions, thus contributing to better understanding and closer friendship between the two countries.

'Factors Hindering Mutual Understanding between Korea and Japan'
With support from the Foundation, Korea-Japan Solidarity 21 hosted a conference under the theme "Factors Hindering Mutual Understanding between Korea and Japan - Structure of Political Unconsciousness" at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center on December 2, 2005. The event enabled in-depth discussion among the participants, which included senior scholars from Japan and Korea, such as Professor Ueno Chizuko, Professor Wada Haruki, and Professor Komori Yoichi of Tokyo University, and Professor Kim Cheol of Yonsei University.

Korean Speech Contest at Dalian, China
The Foundation supported the 3rd Korean Speech Contest for college students from the three Northeastern provinces of China, which was held at Dalian on December 3, 2005. The contestants included 16 Korean-language majors from eight universities in the Jilin, Liaoning, and Heilongjiang Provinces, which attracted an audience of about 500.

'Prospects for Korea-Japan Joint Research: Japanese Studies in Korea and Korean Studies in Japan'
The Foundation provided support to Kyushu University's Research Center for Korean Studies for the symposium it organized on the prospects for Korea-Japan joint research, held at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center on December 3, 2005. Korean and Japanese scholars, along with officials from the Korea Foundation and the Japan Foundation, engaged in constructive discussion related to the research achievements of the Research Center for Korean Studies of Kyushu University and prospects for joint research between scholars of the two countries.

International Exchange of Young Leaders from Southeast and Southwest Asia
The Foundation hosted the visit to Korea of three next-generation leaders from Southeast and Southwest Asia, including a Thai diplomat and a Pakistani journalist, from December 5-12, 2005, as a follow-up to the visit of young leaders from this region in May 2005. The guests visited relevant organizations, such as the Korea Herald, Samsung Economic Research Institute, and the Korea Foundation for Asian Cultural Exchange, to promote friendship and discuss cooperation for exchange projects.

Workshop for Japanese Secondary School Teachers of Social Studies
Co-organized by the Korea Foundation and the Japan Foundation, the workshop session in Korea of this annual exchange program was held at Seoul National University from October 26 through November 9, 2005.









Invitation of Next-Generation Leaders from the Middle East
Following the invitation of next-generation leaders from the Middle East and Africa in July, the Foundation hosted the visit of three Middle Eastern government officials from December 7-14, 2005. The visitors from Jordan, Bahrain, and Qatar enhanced their understanding about Korea through visits to the Korea Muslim Federation, Korea-Arab Friendship Society, and Korea-Jordan Parliamentary Friendship Society, as well as various historical and cultural sites in Gyeongju.

Exhibition of Lee Ufan's Works in France
The Foundation extended support to the Musee d'Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne Metropole for its exhibition of the works of Lee Ufan in France. The exhibition, from December 9, 2005 to February 19, 2006, displayed 17 paintings, and eight mural and architecture works. The museum is well-known for its collection of more than 15,000 s of modern art by 20th and 21st-century artists, including Monet and Picasso.

3rd Korean Speech Contest in Myanmar
With support from the Foundation, the 3rd Korean Speech Contest was held at Yangon, Myanmar, on December 10, 2005, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Myanmar. Of the almost 100 students who applied for the contest, ten contestants were selected for the final competition.

1st Korea-Brazil Forum
Jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, the Foundation hosted the 1st Korea-Brazil Forum in Brasilia on December 13-14, 2005. At the forum, there were in-depth discussions on such issues as the domestic political and social situation of Korea and Brazil, and bilateral cooperation in the international arena; Korea-Brazil cooperation in terms of economic and trade relations, resource development, science and technology, environmental protection, and investment in infrastructure; and ways to promote cultural and academic exchanges between the two countries. This inaugural forum, an outcome of the Korea-Brazil summit meeting held in May 2005, was organized to implement the agreement reached by the two respective heads of state. It was also based on a recognition of the need to evaluate the current state of cooperative relations and discuss ways to realize a future-oriented relationship. The forum was fruitful for establishing a new dialogue channel to expand bilateral cooperation at the non-governmental level.

2nd Korean Speech Contest in Thailand
With the sponsorship of the Foundation, the Korean Embassy in Thailand and Burapha University jointly organized the 2nd Korean Speech Contest in Thailand at the university's Center for Korean Studies, which was held on December 14, 2005.

New Korean Gallery at University of Michigan Museum of Art
The Foundation concluded an agreement that calls for the establishment of a Korean gallery at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Foundation President Kwon In Hyuk visited the University of Michigan on December 15, 2005, to sign the subject agreement with Director James Steward of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Under the agreement, the museum will set up a new Korean gallery by 2008, for which the Foundation will contribute a grant of $500,000. Currently, the museum houses about 300 s of Korean art, of which some 250 s had been acquired from Bruce Hasenkamp, who served in the U.S. Forces in Korea, with a $300,000 acquisition fund contributed by Nam Sang-yong, a Korean businessman. The Foundation has extended similar support to 15 world-renowned museums in six countries, including the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Guimet Museum, for the establishment of independent Korean galleries.

Winter Concert Featuring Maestro Hwang Byungki
The Foundation invited foreigners residing in Korea and other distinguished guests from relevant organizations to its annual year-end concert held at the Hoam Art Hall on December 16, 2005. Combining traditional and contemporary styles, the concert featured gayageum Maestro Hwang Byungki and other prominent performers.

Photo Exhibition "Russia: People and Nature"
The Russian Embassy in Korea and K-Tourist presented a photo exhibition on Russia at the KF Cultural Center from December 19-24, 2005. The exhibition featured photos taken by Korean photographers during their travels to Russia, capturing Russia's picturesque scenery, scenes of daily life, and the magnificence and grandeur of Slavic culture.

2005 KF Fellow Year-end Get-together
The Foundation hosted a year-end get-together for Korea Foundation Fellows at the Diplomatic Center on December 20, 2005.

Concert of "Cappella Manila" from the Philippines
The Foundation and the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines co-hosted a concert of "A Cappella Manila," one of the most popular choral groups in the Philippines. The group performed Philippine folk songs, popular Western and Korean songs, and Christmas carols, which elicited an enthusiastic response from the audience.

3rd Digital Dance Festival
With support from the Foundation, the Korea Chapter of UNESCO's International Dance Council organized the 3rd Digital Festival, which was performed at the KF Cultural Center from December 26-30, 2005. The festival featured the screening of dance videos, interactive dance performances in tandem with videos and art installations, an exhibition of media dance videos, and an informational forum.

Participation in International Events
The Foundation extended support to eight scholars for their participation in international events in countries abroad. The assisted scholars included Professor Im Hyo-jae of the Department of Archaeology and Art History, Seoul National University, who attended the Inter-Congress of the World Archaeological Congress in Osaka, Japan from January 10-16, 2006.

Lecture Series on Islamic Culture
The Foundation is supporting the Korea-Middle East Association's "Islamic Culture Lecture Series," being held at the KF Cultural Center. Korean experts on Islam will present lectures on various Islam-related subjects, ranging from culture to history, politics, and the economy, with which the Korean general public is rather unfamiliar. A series of 13 lectures will be offered at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings from January 10 through April 11, 2006.

Korea-Vietnam Goodwill Concert
The Foundation provided support to the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Company and Nhac Vien Arts Company of Vietnam for their joint goodwill concert held in Vietnam. At the invitation of the Korean School in Ho Chi Minh City, from January 16-23, 2006, the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Company performed pansori, salpuri, and sinawi works, as well as traditional Korean songs. The goodwill concert also featured traditional Vietnamese music, including Vietnamese monochord instrument music and traditional vocal songs. The goodwill concert served to promote cultural exchange between Korea and Vietnam as well as to introduce Korea's traditional music to audiences in Vietnam.

'Buddhist Art of India' Exhibition
The Foundation and the National Museum of India have jointly organized an exhibition on Buddhist art of India. The exhibition, being held at the KF Cultural Center from January 17 through February 28, 2006, features 51 pieces of Buddhist art from the 2nd century B.C. to the 20th century provided by the National Museum of India. The displayed artifacts include stone carvings on the life of Buddha; statues of Buddha and bodhisattvas made of stone, bronze, and other materials; pagodas; Buddhist scriptures including esoteric writings; beads; and other authentic relics.

Korea Foundation Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships
Under the Fellowship for Graduate Studies (2005-2006), the Foundation has provided support to 169 graduate students from 11 countries: China, Mongolia, Vietnam, India, Uzbekistan, Russia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Australia, and New Zealand. The Foundation also organized an inaugural general meeting of the Korea Foundation Fellow Network, which was held in Beijing in December 2005. This gathering was intended to enable former Korea Foundation Fellows in Beijing and elsewhere to maintain contact and exchange through the establishment of network relations. From November 2005 to January 2006, a total of 18 Korea Foundation Fellows from 12 countries have conducted their respective field research in Korea.
