1st Seoul-Washington Forum
A new nongovernmental forum was launched in 2006 for representatives from Korea and the U.S. to gather together and exchange opinions and information on matters of mutual concern. The first Seoul-Washington Forum, co-organized was held on May 1-3, in Washington, D.C. The event included in-depth discussions on such subjects as "A Partnership for Peace: Foundations of the Korea-U.S. Alliance," and "Korea-U.S. Economic Cooperation."

Support for International Conferences
From May to July, Foundation support was provided to nine international conferences, including "East Asia in the World and the Future of Korea" academic conference of the Korean Association of International Studies (May 31-June 2), "In Search of 21st Century Korean Studies" conference of the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies of Seoul National University, held in celebration of the 230th anniversary of its founding (July 20-21), and "Yaskuni Shrine in the Eyes of the World" international conference of the Institute for Collaborative Research Activities.

Invitation of Foreign Dignitaries
The Foundation regularly hosts the visits of various foreign figures to promote mutual understanding and friendship. Recent visitors have included Robin Minard, professor of Franz List Music School, Germany (May 6-13), Lasanth Wickrematunge, editor-in-chief of The Sunday Leader, Sri Lanka (May 8-15), Borislav Mihailov Borisov, president of the University of the Global Economy, Bulgaria (May 9-15), Andrea Margelletti, director of the Institute of International Affairs, Italy (May 13-21) Gideon Gono, president of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (May 14-22), Chintana Bhandhufalck, secretary general of the Royal Institute, Thailand (May 15-21), Edward Davey, member of the British House of Parliament (May 27-June 2), Dejan Savic, director of the Serbian National Theater, Beograde, Servia (May 22-28), Jean Daniel Tordjman, Inspector General of Finance, Ministry of Finance, France (May 26-June 4), Kiyoshi Saito, senior journalist of Nisi Nippon Newspaper, Japan (June 5-11), Yossi Melman, journalist of Haaretz, Israel (June 10-16), president of Pan-Myo-Tayar Publishing Housem Myanmar (June 13-19), Sepp Linhart, director of the East Asia Research Center of National Vienna University, Austria (July 2-8).

Performance Tour of Traditional Korean Shaman Ritual of Northern Europe
The Foundation sponsored the Sonoann Organization's performance tour of "Traditional Korean Shaman Ritual" of northern Europe, Finland, Norway, and Estonia (May 11-16).

Jeong Ga Ak Hoe: Festival of Korean Music
At the invitation of the Asian Museum of San Francisco, the Jeong Ga Ak Hoe troupe staged traditional Korean music performances on May 17-19, in conjunction with the museum's opening of the exhibition "From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics." The company's traditional Korean instrumental music included Young San Hoe Sang and works by Na Hyo-shin, a Korean-American composer. Jeong Ga Ak Hoe also performed at the Old First Concert, at the invitation of its organizer, and the San Francisco Public Library

2006 Spring Field Trip for Korean Language Training Fellows
Some 70 Korean-language fellows of the Foundation participated in a spring field trip to Cultural and historical sites outside of Seoul (May 18-20).

'Mulpa and Mouk-ki' Exhibition
On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the Foundation sponsored the exhibition "Mulpa and Mouk-ki" held at the Cite Internationale des Arts in France (May 24-June 3). A total of 19 painters of Mouk-ki, a group of followers of the late Lee Ung-no, and Mulpa, a group of Korean painters, contributed works featured the Sumuk-wha style (Indian-ink painting).

Participation in International Events
The Foundation extended support to various Korean specialists for their participation in international events held abroad. Recent beneficiaries included Choi Jeong-pil, President of the Korea ICOM (International Council of Museums), who attended the 68th Consultative Meeting of the ICOM held in Paris (May 29-31), and Yun Gap-gu, Director of the Northeast Asia Peace Solidarity, who participated in the "5th Northeast Asia Economic Forum" held in Siberia, Russia (June 24) and Han Ji-hee, Lecturer of English of the Yonsei University, who participated in the "Poetry and Politics Conference" held at Stirling University in Scotland, Uk(July 12-16).

Traditional Korean Percussion Music Performances in Bulgaria and Ireland
The Foundation support was provided for a performance tour of Bulgaria and Ireland by Dulsori, a Korean percussion company. The company performed in Sophia, Bulgaria on May 31, and in Dublin, Koch, and other cities in Ireland (June 7-12).

2006 Spring Field Trip for Field Research Fellows
The Spring Field Trip for the fellows being awarded the Fellowship for Field Research and Fellowship for Graduate Studies for the year 2006 was held from June 1 to June 3. About 36 fellows participated in the field trip and had the opportunity to learn more about Korea's traditional heritage by visiting various places throughout the Gangwon Province.

Future Leaders of Southeast and Southwest Asia
A group of 12 producers and TV broadcast staff from Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and Mongolia recently visited Korea at the invitation of the Foundation. During their stay, the guests visited Korea's KBS and MBC TV networks, the Korean Media Industry Promotion Office, and various Korean media firms.

Ssamzie Space International Exchange Exhibition
Ssamzie Space, with sponsorship support from the Foundation, hosted an international exchange exhibition in conjunction with the Schinkel-Progressive Residency. The exhibition was presented from June 13 through August 3 at Ssamzie Space in Seoul. The exhibition displayed the works of three painters each from Korea and Germany. A reciprocal exhibition will be staged in Germany in November of this year.

Get-together for Diplomats of Korean Language Training Program
The Foundation hosted a dinner for 20 foreign diplomats and government officials participating in the Korean Language Training Program, held at the Korea House on June 20.

Nam Youngho Company 'Extra Muros'
The Foundation assisted with the Nam Youngho Company's joint Korean-French performance of "Extra Muros," on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-France diplomatic relations (July 3-4). The performances, which were part of the program of the Montpellier Dance Festival in France, provided a valuable opportunity to present the contemporary dance of Korea to the culturally sophisticated French audiences.

4th Forum of Future Leaders of Korea, Japan, and China
Together with the Chinese Youth Association and the Japan Foundation, the Foundation organized the 4th Forum of Future Leaders of Korea, Japan, and China, which was conducted on July 9-19. The forum venues included Sendai, Japan (July 9-12), Seoul and Jeju Island (July 12-15), and Chin Tao and Beijing (July 15-19). The future-leader participants engaged in discussion to promote "Three-way Cooperation for an East Asian Community."

Korean Studies Workshop for U.S. Educators
The Foundation held Korean Studies workshops for middle-high school teachers of history/social sciences and textbook editors from the U.S. The workshop included two sessions, the first from July 6-19, and the second from July 27-Aug 9. The 100 teachers and editors who participated in the workshop attended informational lectures on Korea-related topics at the Graduate School of International Studies of Yonsei University. In addition, the workshop participants enjoyed a variety of events like visiting high schools in Korea, field trips to various attractions, and touring industrial complexes.

Cultural Event for KF Fellows
On July 11, the Korea Foundation arranged a visit to the National Museum of Korea for a group of 60 research fellows, Korean-language fellows, and diplomat/government official fellows. This event was organized to provide an opportunity for Foundation fellows to acquire firsthand information about Korea's culture and history.

6th Annual Conference of the Chinese Association for Korean Language Education and Research
From July 15-16, the Chinese Association for Korean Language Education and Research held its 6th annual conference at the University of Qiangdao, Shangdong Province. Under a theme of "Present and Future of Korean Education in China," the conference was intended to assess the current status of Korean grammar education, evaluate primary-level Korean texts, and discuss efficient methods to further upgrade the level of Korean education in China.

KF Fellowship
As of July 2006, total of 39 Field Research fellows from 19 countries has completed their research projects or are conducting on-site research in Korea, together with 60 Korean Language fellows from 33 countries who have received language training at institutions affiliated with Korean Universities.

Training for Chinese Educators of Korean Language
The Korea Foundation, in cooperation with the Chinese Association for Korean Language Education and Research, offered a training course on the latest teaching methods of Korean-language education from July 24 through August 7. The training classes, organized by the Institute of International Education of Kyunghee University, were attended by 27 Korean-language teachers from China.
