1. 2007 Spring Field Trip for Korean Language Training Fellows may 17-19A group of 50 Korea Foundation Fellows of Korean Language Training enjoyed a three-day spring field trip from May 17-19.
Their visits to the Gyeongju and Andong areas provided them with an opportunity to compare Silla and Joseon cultures, experience local food and culture, and foster friendship among the program fellows from various countries.



2. 2007 Annual Conference of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) and Professional Development Workshop june 13-16
The AATK annual conference, the largest annual meeting of Korean language teachers in the U.S., was held at the University of Chicago, with the attendance of 123 instructors, professors, and teachers of Korean. This year’s event was especially meaningful in terms of the number of participants, conference organization, and the quality of presentation papers that was better than ever due to a thorough evaluation process.*Venue: University of Chicago, U.S.A.

3. 19th Korean Studies Workshop june 20-july 3
Co-organized by the Foundation and the Graduate School of International Studies, Korea University, the 19th Korean Studies Workshop was held from June 20-July 3. A total of 43 secondary school teachers of history/social studies, textbook writers and editors, and education administrators from three major English-speaking countries - the U.S. (20), Australia (19), and New Zealand (4) - participated in the workshop to acquire accurate information about Korea and experience Korean culture firsthand.

4. Korean Studies Workshop for European Educators july 3-july 16
Co-organized by the Foundation and the Graduate School of International Studies, Hanyang University, the 2007 Korean Studies Workshop for European Educators was held with the participation of 13 secondary school teachers of history/social studies and education administrators from 10 European countries. Through lectures, opportunities to experience Korean culture, and visits to schools and industrial complexes, the workshop provided the participants with a wealth of information on Korea that can be utilized in classroom instruction.

5. Korean Cultural Performances in China may 21-28
The Foundation organized a tour of Korean cultural performances of Shenyang, Chengtu, and Guangzhou, China, from May 21-28. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Korea, the tour featured B-Boy performances, in which Korea is top-ranked in the world, contributing to the popularity of Hallyu (Korean Wave). The performance was staged four times, featuring the B-Boy musical “Spin Odyssey” by the Last for One team.

6. Gayaguem and Western Ensemble Parallel Performance june 21-22
Korean and U.S. university professors and students performed music d by U.S. composers based on Korea’s traditional melodies and instruments. Following its premier in the U.S. in April, the performance was presented at Umyeondang, National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, in Seoul on June 21. In conjunction with the performance, an academic seminar on the globalization of Korean music was conducted at the Korean National University of Arts. Participant universities included University of California-Santa Cruz, University of California-Davis, University of California-Berkeley, Ewha Womans University, and Korean National University of Arts.

7. Exhibition of Art of Bulgarian Books and Ex Libris may 9-30
Featuring 16 ex libris and 50 illustration works, the exhibition introduced illustrations, layouts, and letter-type design of general books and textbooks of Bulgaria. Hosted by the Union of Bulgarian Artists, which was established in 1968, the exhibition displayed the trends and development of Bulgarian publishing art over the past decade.

8. Exhibition of Contemporary Art of Iran july 4-13
FAM Gallery of Iran hosted an exhibition on the contemporary art of Iran from July 4-13. The exhibition featured 60 paintings of 30 Iranian artists related to a theme of “Process of Revolution in Iranian Paintings from Persian Paintings to Modern Arts."

9. 2007 Workshop of the Association of Russian Universities Offering Korean Studies Programs (RAUK) may 20-23
RAUK hosted a Korean Studies workshop at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University, on May 21-22. The workshop provided RAUK members with an opportunity to evaluate their activities during the 2006-07 academic year and to discuss their 2007-08 plans, including publication of a Korean Studies journal, opening of a RAUK homepage, workshop for Korean language instructors, and exchange of professors among member universities for special lectures. Together with the workshop, the first seminar on teaching methods for Korean language educators in Russia was held to provide a venue to discuss Korean textbooks and pedagogy, which was attended by representatives from 18 Russian universities.

10. 3rd Korean Studies Consortium Workshop for Graduate Students: ‘Korean Identity, Past and Present’ july 3-8
The third Korean Studies Consortium Workshop for Graduate Students was held with the participation of graduate students from seven countries of Asia, North America, and Europe at UBC, Canada (July 3-8). This workshop has been organized annually since 2005 by the Korean Studies Consortium, composed of 12 universities including Kyushu University, Japan, and UBC, Canada.

11. 5th Korean Studies Association of Australasia Conference july 12-13
This biannual conference is conducted to promote Korean Studies and encourage Korean Studies scholars and graduate students to present the results of their Korea-related research work. The fifth conference was held on a theme of “Enlightening Korea: Converging or Diverging," with the participation of 55 Korean specialists from Southeast Asia and Oceania.

12. Invitation Program may-july

13. Next-Generation Leaders Program for Africa may 15-22
The Foundation invited eight next-generation leaders of Africa’s political and journalism sectors. The guests from Zimbabwe, Sudan, Tanzania, Algeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, and Cameroon visited such organizations as the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security and the Korea Economic Research Institute, as well as cultural sites in Gyeongju and industrial complexes to enhance their understanding about Korea and develop a personal network for exchange and cooperation with Korea.

14.8th Korea-Russia Forum may 28-29
Together with the Diplomatic Academy of Russia, the Foundation jointly organized the 8th Korea-Russia Forum in Seoul, on May 28-29. With the attendance of about 40 Korean and Russian figures representing the political, business, and academic sectors, the forum addressed such relevant topics as Russia’s role in energy aid for North Korea, a key issue of the February 13 agreement on North Korea’s nuclear program; linking the TSR and TKR, a top agenda item for discussion following the historic test runs of inter-Korean railway lines; and Korea-Russia cooperation in the energy sector.
