Introducing Korea to the World

Since its inception, the Korea Foundation has published and produced periodicals and books on Korea for worldwide readers.

I. 『Fragrance of Korea: The Ancient Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner of Baekje』
This book is an extensively illustrated English-language catalog featuring the Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner of Baekje. This ancient artifact has been designated a National Treasure of Korea (No. 287) and acclaimed as the consummate metalcraft masterpiece of East Asia for its exquisite detail and elegant beauty.

II. 『Korean Relics in Overseas Collections Series』
Over a 12-year period since 1986, Korean art specialists have been dispatched to some 111 museums in 14 countries, including the United States, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, to conduct on-site surveys of Korean cultural relics housed in museums abroad. The results have been published in an eight-volume series which catalogues the Korean relics housed in those museums.

III. 『Korean Cultural Heritage Series』
This Four-volume English series is a compilation of the articles from previous issues of Koreana, a quarterly magazine on Korea’s culture and arts published by the Korea Foundation.

IV. 『Korean Culture Series』
The Korea Foundation and Hollym International have published informational books about Korean culture in English to provide an indepth explanation to general readers. Currently, the Foundation is working on additional volumes of the Korean Culture Series on such subjects as Korean court ritual music, folk and court dance and ceramics.
1. Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea, Kim Young-na
- discusses tradition, modernity, and identity of modern and contemporary art in Korea
2. Seowon, Lee Sang-hee
- provides a comprehensive introduction to the private institutions, which were dedicated to higher learning that eventually emerged at the forefront of Neo-Confucianism in Korea
3. Palaces of Korea, Kim Dong-uk
- introduces the historical background and architectural styles of Korea’s palaces
4. Korean Landscape Painting, Yi Song-mi
- presents the elegant beauty of Korean landscape paintings and their historical background by historical period
5. Modern Korean Ink Painting, Chung Hyung-min
- explores the evolution of modern Korean ink painting from the opening of Korea’s ports to outside trade in 1876 through the 1980s
6. Maedeup: The Art of Traditional Korean Knots, Kim Hee-jin
- introduces the history of maedeup, its uses, and the making of maedeup
7. Seasonal Customs of Korea, David E. Shaffer
- describes the folk traditions of everyday life of Korean
8. Buddhist Sculpture of Korea, Kim Lena
- provides a comprehensive overview of the Buddhist sculpture of Korea
9. Buddhist Architecture of Korea, Kim Sung-woo
- focuses on the role that architecture played in Korea’s Buddhist culture and explains its physical characteristics
10. Traditional Performing Arts of Korea, Jeon Kyung-wook
- provides a comprehensive overview of the background, genres, and performers of the traditional performing arts of Korea

V. 『Dictionary of Korean Art & Archaeology』
This publication seeks to promote a broader understanding of Korean culture and arts among foreigners with an interest in Korea’s cultural legacy, and support scholarly research by providing English definitions and explanations of terminology used for cultural artifacts.

VI. 『Korean Food Guides』
To help both foreigners and Koreans better understand Korea’s food culture and more easily order food at Korean restaurants, this guide presents an overview of Korea’s food culture and consists of over 800 terms for traditional and modern Korean foods in English and French with a brief description of the cooking method.
