Foundation's New Executive Vice Presidents Inaugurated

Former Korean Ambassador to Libya Kim Sungyup and former Korean Ambassador to Peru Hahn Young-hee have assumed office as executive vice presidents of the Korea Foundation, as of July 4. In an inaugural ceremony on that day, the two new executive vice presidents pledged to put forth their best efforts to strengthen the Foundation's public diplomacy activities and thereby contribute to enhancement of the “Korea Brand.”

Executive Vice Presidents Kim Sungyup and Hahn Young-hee both passed the Korean government’s Foreign Service examination in 1975, and have since served as career diplomats for more than three decades. Executive Vice President Kim has served as Consul-General in Atlanta and Ambassador to Libya, while Executive Vice President Hahn has been dispatched as Ambassador to Guatemala and Ambassador to Peru. In their inaugural remarks at a ceremony held at the Leaders Club, Diplomatic Center, the new executive vice presidents stated that they would do their utmost to strengthen the activities of the Foundation, as the leading Korean organization responsible for Korea’s public diplomacy, and to facilitate creative and passionate efforts to enhance the “Korea Brand,” based on the harmony and unity of the Foundation’s executives and staff members.

Executive Vice President Kim Sung-yup
While serving as ambassador and the head of diplomatic missions abroad, I was greatly assisted by the Korea Foundation. Such cases include the visit of the president of Vanderbilt University, when I was Consul-General in Atlanta, and the support for an East Asian nonnuclear institution related to Korea’s security situation. It is evident that such efforts of the Foundation, across the world and over a long period of time, will help to significantly enhance the “Korea Brand” and upgrade the competitiveness of Korea in such sectors as politics, economy, society, and culture.
To make such efforts more effective, however, we should increase awareness of the Korea Foundation among the Korean general public. I believe that we can make the Foundation’s position more secure and build a solid platform for the fulfillment of our role when those representing various sectors of Korea become more familiar with the Foundation’s vital role.
As Executive Vice President, I will also do my very best to assist President Yim and join you in funneling creativity and passion into the efforts to strengthen Korea’s public diplomacy.

Executive Vice President Hahn Young-hee
Security and economy have long dominated Korea’s diplomacy during my career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Cultural diplomacy and public diplomacy, however, are now being increasingly emphasized, as a result of Korea’s attainment of democracy and its ranking as the world’s tenth-largest economy.
In consideration of this shift in diplomatic strategy, I believe that the role of the Korea Foundation, the forerunner of Korea’s public diplomacy in the international community, is especially important. As Executive Vice President of the Foundation, I will make concerted efforts to maintain close, cooperative relations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, for the more active implementation of Foundation programs, and at the same time strive to optimize the harmonize and unity of the Foundation executives and staff members.
I thus encourage the Foundation staff to exercise their fullest passion and creativity for the promotion of the Foundation’s programs, and to spare no effort in this regard. While utilizing my experience as a diplomat for 33 years, I will do my very best to enhance the status of the Korea Foundation and to advance Korea’s public diplomacy.
