‘Korean Night’

A ‘Korean Night’ event was held by the Korea Foundation Fellowship Association in Moscow and the gathering was an ideal opportunity for students and notable scholars of Korean Studies to make acquaintances and have a delectable banquet of Korean Food.
The attendees all voiced their enthusiasm for having this event held on an annual basis.



A “Korean Night” event, organized by the Korea Foundation and Moscow KF Fellowship Association, was held at the “Seoul” restaurant in Moscow (December 12, 2008). The second meeting of this association included the attendance of some 30 prominent professors, lecturers, and specialists of Korean Studies from the leading universities, institutes and academies of the Moscow area.
In addition, invitations to this event were also extended to firstyear students pursuing Korea-related interests from six area universities: Moscow State University, Moscow State University of International Relationships, Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow State Linguistic University, Russian State Social University, and Institute of Oriental Studies.
The gathering was an ideal opportunity for students and notable scholars of Korean Studies to make acquaintances, acquire informational materials from the Foundation, view videos about Korean culture, and discover the delights of Korea’s traditional cuisine. Of note, about 60 students from the Moscow area participated in this event, reflecting a sharp increase in their numbers in recent years.
An opening session was presided over by the Ambassador of Korea, Lee Kyu-hyung, and President of the Moscow KF Fellowship Association, Pavel Leshakov. The president of the fellows association, Pavel Leshakov, along with thanking the Foundation for the support and financial aid it has provided to universities and students in Russia over the years, noted that many projects have been successfully undertaken in cooperation with the Foundation, and many more proposals are being planned.
In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Lee Kyu-hyung emphasized the importance of this kind of occasion, while also expressing his pleasure at seeing such a large number of students of Korean Studies, who represent the next generation of Korea-related specialists. In addition, Ambassador Lee presented KF scholarship awards to three MA and two PhD students.
This was followed by an overview of the Foundation’s programs and activities in Russia by Lim Chul-woo, Director of the KF Moscow Office. Thereafter, brief remarks were made by distinguished professors and scholars, including Jhebin A.Z., Lee V.F., Saveliev R.V., Vorontsov A.V., Kontsevich L.R., and introductions of the lecturers and students. The “Korean Night” event was highlighted by a delectable banquet of Korean food and a student singing competition, which included prizes for the most outstanding performers.

Meaningful Gathering
Activities during the course of the evening included reports on recent developments, such as Foundation’s publications and research projects, viewing of videos on Korean culture, and a decision by the fellows association to invite Korea-related students to future events.
Before departing, the participants expressed their gratitude to the Korea Foundation and the event organizers, along with praising the value of this occasion to socialize in an informal setting. The students were especially grateful to meet with Moscow’s foremost Korean specialists, as well as the opportunity to get to know students from other institutions and to enjoy Korean food, which for many was a first-time experience. And, the attendees all voiced their enthusiasm for having this event held on an annual basis.
