‘All Together in Music’ Kicks Off in May

World-renowned maestros and talented classical musicians will perform classical and contemporary programs for local music lovers at the inaugural Seoul International Music Festival.
The Seoul International Music Festival (SIMF) will feature a variety of concert events over an nineday period (May 22-30) at leading performance venues in Seoul, including the Sejong Center, Seoul Arts Center, LG Arts Center, and Kumho Art Hall. Under a theme of “All Together in Music,” the SIMF will highlight the friendly relations and harmony of classical music performers from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the greatest maestros of modern times, is serving as Honorary Art Director of the SIMF, along with Ryu Jea Joon, a Korean composer that has studied under Penderecki, who is the Art Director of the initial presentation of this event.
Together with the Korean Chamber Orchestra, violinists Aiman Mussakhajayeva of Palestine and Roy Shiloah of Israel will play J.S. Bach’s violin Concerto at the opening concert of the 2009 Seoul International Music Festival on May 22, at the LG Arts Center.
The festival’s events will feature such notable performers as cello maestro Arto Noras, who has been called the “Rostropovich of the 21st century”; pianist Ralf Gothoni, who serves as the principal Conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra; pianist Julius Jeongwon Kim; violinist Kim So-ock; soprano Kim In-hye; baritone Han Myung-won; and mezzo-soprano Lee A-kyung; along with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of fast-rising star Lukasz Borowitz; Emperor Piano Trio; Korean Chamber Orchestra, Goyang Civic Professional Choir; and Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus. In conjunction with the music festival, a SIMF Special Exhibition is being staged at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center throughout the festival period, from May 22-30, 2009.
