‘ Helping Korea to Shine on the Global Stage in 2010’

The following is an overview of the major activities and programs that the Korea Foundation intends to undertake in 2010. The Foundation is redoubling its commitment to enhancing Korea’s brand value among the international community, through the more effective implementation of its exchange activities.

Korean Studies Department

Support for Korean Studies Overseas
Support for Korean Studies will implement a regionally differentiated strategy to more effectively respond to the particular education and research conditions of individual countries and regions. Efforts will focus on measures to strengthen the status of Korean Studies as an integral component of East Asian studies programs in North America. Specifically, the Foundation will seek to negotiate more favorable costsharing arrangements with program recipients and diversify the scope of Korean Studies courses by providing support for the establishment of professorships. Plans call for reinforcing programs to foster young scholars so as to assure that highly qualified candidates are appointed to newly established faculty positions and such professors are then able to secure tenure. In addition, support will be extended to Korean Studies centers abroad for their development into vibrant academic hubs, in line with designated specialty areas, such as the humanities, social sciences, and culture/art, based on the expertise of relevant faculty members. In Asia, where demand for Korean language education has surged due to lucrative employment opportunities at Korean businesses in the region, MOUs will be concluded to outline long-term development efforts with leading universities in such countries as India, Thailand, and Indonesia, thereby paving the way for Korean language education to eventually result in the development of Korean Studies. In Western Europe, program measures will emphasize Korean Studies research and education, with a focus on East Asian studies centers in accordance with the EU’s various academic Initiatives. In the region of Eastern Europe and the CIS, where countries have emerged as Korea’s cooperative partners for natural resource development, continued support will be provided for academic exchange and the promotion of Korean language and culture education, in order to lay the groundwork for the commencement of Korean Studies. In Africa and South America, the Foundation intends to conduct short term lecture tours, offer month-long intensive courses on practical Korean Studies invite students and scholars to visit Korea, and help to establish degree programs and Korean language/cultural centers.

Fellowship Program Department

Fellowship for Field Research
Fellowship support is extended to encourage Korea-related specialists abroad to conduct research on Korea and foster the next generat ion of Korean Studies scholars. In 2010, the Foundation will host the visit of some 52 scholars from 22 countries, including three fellows selected in conjunction with Germany’s DAAD (Germany Academic Exchange Service). The invited scholars will conduct onsite research and participate in the Korean Studies Forum sessions co-organized by Yonsei University and Sogang University, field trips, and various cultural activities to deepen their understanding about Korea and gain firsthand knowledge about Korean society.

Fellowship for Korean Language Training/Graduate Studies
In 2010, 51 graduate students of Korean Studies/ language, Korean language instructors, and international exchange-related professionals from 28 countries are slated to visit Korea for Korean language education and cultural experiences. In addition, diplomats from 17 countries will participate in a Korean language and culture program. To help nurture the next generation of Korean Studies specialists, scholarship aid is regularly provided to graduate students of Korean Studies, which in 2010 will involve some 150 support recipients at major universities in North America, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Australasia.

Support for Research and Publications
The Foundation offers assistance to Korean Studies scholars to encourage their academic writing to increase the availability of publications on Korea in foreign languages, including textbooks and reference materials. In 2010, continued support will be provided to young scholars for their refinement and publication of doctoral dissertations on Korea- related topics and the research activities that will facilitate their appointment to Korean Studies faculty positions.

Korean Studies Workshop Programs for Educators
Workshop programs in Korea are regularly held for overseas educators so that they can enhance their under standing about Korea and improve the quality of Korea-related education worldwide. Secondary school teachers of history/social studies, textbook writers/editors, and education administrators from about 30 countries, including the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia will visit Korea to broaden their understanding about Korea’s history, culture, education, and politics, along with enjoying various personal experiences, like home stay and visiting Korean students in the classroom.

Intellectual Exchange Department

Invitation Program
In 2010, the Foundation will host the visit of about 150 distinguished individuals from 60 countries, related to the cultural, media, academic, and business sectors, so that they can meet with relevant organizations and present lectures. Through this peopleto- people interaction, the visitors will have a chance to exchange information with their counterparts, along with enhancing their understanding about Korea and developing personal relationships. Another 100 former U.S. Peace Corps volunteers will visit Korea which includes a return to the schools and health care facilities where they had served in the 1960s-1970s.

International Exchange of Next-Generation Leaders
Plans calls for the visit of some 270 next generation leaders from such regions as Central/South America, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and CIS to enhance their understanding about Korea and promote personal network relations, through visits to relevant organizations, industrial sites, and cultural/historical attractions.

Youth/Student Exchange
The Foundation intends to have 175 U.S. youth (75 university students and 100 high school students) as part of the “Korea-U.S. Youth Network,” and 300 Chinese students, under the “Korea-China Youth Exchange Program,” visit Korea in 2010. During their stay, the student groups will attend introductory lectures on Korea, enjoy cultural experiences, and interact with their Korean counterparts. The exchange program with China will include the visit of 100 Korean students to China, at the invitation of the program coorganizer, Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. In addition, existing exchange programs, like that for Korea - Japan Youth Exchange, will be continued, in an effort to enhance mutual understanding of each other's history and culture and thus contribute to more cooperative relations in the future.

Policy and Research Department

Forums
The Foundation supports and arranges forums with its key partner countries, including the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia, and other leading countries like France, the U.K., Germany, India, Spain, and Brazil, to provide a venue for the exchange of opinions on pending issues and matters of concern, in an effort to promote mutual understanding and closer cooperation. The forums are attended by prominent figures of each country, representing the government, business, media, academic, and cultural sectors, thus contributing to well-rounded discussion and the creation of personal networks. In 2010, the Foundation is scheduled to host or extend assistance to bilateral forums with 12 countries, and multilateral forums with the regions of Central Asia, ASEAN, and the EU. Next year’s plans call for the presentation of ten KF Forums and about six KF Expert Seminars, as well as sessions of the Global Korea Speakers Forum, which enable Korean leaders to deliver lectures abroad.

Policy Research
As a representative public diplomacy agency i n Korea, the Foundation strives to bolster Korea’s status and nation brand among the international community. For this, we emphasize research activities that contribute to the development of a more effective public policy strategy and measures for the implementation of various exchange activities. In particular, the Foundation will host a third international conference on Korea’s nation branding, to follow up on similar gatherings in 2008 and 2009, and a research team composed of public policy experts. Under the “Korea Foundation Public Policy Translation Series,” two additional books will be published to introduce the latest public policy concepts to readers in Korea.

Support for International Conferences
To enhance Korea’s people-to- people diplomacy, Foundation support is extended to academic/research institutions in Korea for their organization of international conferences, along with assistance being provided to private organizations to help with their international exchange activities. In 2010, plans call for the provision of assistance
to about ten international conferences in Korea as well as 14 private-level groups. In conjunction with local governments, the Foundation will help to organize an international symposium on Korea’s fast growing multicultural society, in an effort to internalize the globalization of Korea and its people.

Culture and Arts Department

Performance and Exhibition Events
In 2010, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Korea’s diplomatic relations with Russia and Mongolia, and the 30th anniversary with the UAE, a wide variety of cultural events will be staged in cooperation with local cultural groups and Korea’s diplomatic missions in these countries. Continued cultural exchange efforts will include performance tours of countries with which Korea has yet to develop in depth relations and cultural interaction. Along with additional events to publicize Korean culture and cuisine, the Foundation is organizing an innovative “Kore-A-Moves” performance tour
program to introduce the excellence of Korean dance to five European countries, including Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, as part of the endeavors to make aspects of Korea’s modern culture better known to worldwide audiences. In addition, a contemporary Korean art exhibition will be held in three East European countries, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Bulgaria, to heighten awareness of Korea’s recent artistic developments. The Foundation will also provide continued assistance to private cultural/artistic organizations to support their international exchange activities, which contribute to the promotion of Korea’s global image as a country with an advanced and diversified culture.

Support for Overseas Museums
In 2010, Foundation's support is being extended to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, University of Pittsburgh Korean Heritage Room, University of Minnesota Weisman Art Museum, and Hamel House in the Netherlands for their development of exhibition space for the display of Korean artifacts and art works. Meanwhile, ongoing assistance for projects related to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (U.S.), Museum of Oriental Art (Russia), and National Museum of Oriental Art (Italy), will result in the opening of their new Korean galleries in 2010.
To encourage more active organization of special exhibitions and Korea-related programs at overseas museums, the Foundation is jointly organizing an exhibition tour to highlight the Korean collections of prominent museums in Germany, along with providing support to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Fowler Museum of UCLA, in the U.S.; the Korea Museum in Japan; and Tate Liverpool in the U.K.; for their special exhibitions of Korean art.
The Foundation will host another session of the annual Workshop for Korean Art Curators in 2010, marking the 12th year of this highly acclaimed program. The workshop program provides the curatorial staff responsible for the Korean collections at museums abroad with an opportunity to deepen their expertise about Korean art and global networks for the promotion of Korea’s culture and arts. Program support is also being extended for the dispatch of a visiting curator to the British Museum to offer advice on the Korean gallery’s operation and its acquisition of Korean antiquities.

Korea Foundation Cultural Center

In 2010, the fifth year of thee Korea Foundation Cultural Center’s operations, several noteworthy activities and events will be staged. A unique exhibition “Italian Style - Dressing Home” will be presented in January, followed by another 15 exhibitions on various themes, including Indonesia’s traditional batik culture, cotemporary art of Zimbabwe, and Arabian culture, will be hosted by the KFCC. Of note, several countries will organize and present their first exhibition events at the Center, such as Israel, Portugal, Indonesia, and Zimbabwe. Preparations are also underway to organize regular lecture series on the world’s cultural heritage and cinema music that will feature presentations by archaeologists, art historians, and area specialists, and special lectures on Korean culture for foreigners.
The Korea Foundation Volunteer Network will offer a total of 12 Korean language classes, which includes an additional class on Wednesday afternoon. Also, a chamber music concert featuring young Irish and Korean musicians will be held in March, and a concert of traditional Korean music, with fusion-style adaptations, in June. The annual Gallery Concert in September, to celebrate the KFCC anniversary, will present a unique musical performance. Ongoing activities include regular film screenings and occasional film festivals. A kind of retrospective event is slated to show the most popular films that have previously been screened at the KFCC Cinema Room.

Media Department

Publication of Books on Korea
The Foundation continues to support the publication of books on Korean culture, in foreign languages, so that these materials can be utilized as cultural contents for the introduction of Korean culture. Of note, a book published with program assistance, “Modern Korean Artists,” was presented as a gift to President Obama during the Korea-U.S. summit in November 2009. Books slated to be published include an English language catalog of the gold crowns of Silla, overview of Korea’s court dance, two books of selected Koreana articles, and a new pocketbook series of feature articles from Koreana.

Video Clips on Korea
The Foundation intends to produce brief video clips on Korea that can be used for Korea-related education in classrooms abroad. In conjunction with the Association for Asian Studies and its Committee on Korean Studies (AASCKS), we have conducted a survey of Korean Studies scholars for input on the video-clip project. In line with the survey results, video content on Korea’s history, economy, culture, and society will be compiled/produced and made available for online users.

Multimedia Content
The Foundation plans to produce a 20- minute video on Korea’s economic development, in response to requests from Korean diplomatic missions abroad. The video content will be distributed to overseas universities, Korean diplomatic missions, and relevant public organizations.

Publications in Foreign Languages
The existing programs to support the publication of introductory books on Korea - one for publishers in Korea and another for publishers abroad - will be integrated into a single program in an effort to offer more systematic support to the publication of such materials. Details of the new program will be announced in near future.

Integration of Distribution Programs
In 2010, the Regular Distribution, Distribution by Request, and Distribution of Introductory Materials programs are being integrated for more effective administration. Requests for materials are accepted throughout the year, while requested materials will be sent out four times a year (January, April, July, October). Each year, participant institutions can request and receive Korea-related materials worth 2 million won, including shipping expenses.
