Exposure for Foundation Publications and Video Content

The Seoul International Book Fair 2010 was held on May 12-16 at COEX in Samseongdong, Seoul. As a participant of the Book Fair, the Korea Foundation’s exhibition booth featured displays of its wide variety of publications and video content (DVDs), along with general information about its media programs, which attracted considerable attention from a seemingly endless stream of event visitors.

Now in its 16th year of operation, this year’s Seoul International Book Fair (SIBF) included the participation of 591 publishers from 21 countries around the world. The participants conducted a variety of promotional efforts, in addition to arranging business meetings to discuss copyright matters and the details of book import/export deals. The 2010 Guest of Honor country was France, which induced some 100 French publishers and related figures to participate in the book fair. The SIBF 2010 attracted large crowds of visitors with a number of noteworthy activities, including “Meet the Author” events, book art and e-book exhibitions, and seminars on publishing-related matters.

Popular Publications
Based on the positive results of 2008 and 2009, the Foundation again participated in the SIBF 2010 for the purpose of expanding awareness of its publications, video content,
and media programs. The Foundation displayed the periodicals, books, and catalogs that it has published in recent years, together with the books and video content, produced at home and abroad, with support from the Foundation’s assistance programs. About 100 titles and DVDs were on display at the Foundation booth.

Of note, the front of the booth featured the cover pages of the Foundation’s Koreana, a quarterly journal on Korea’s culture and arts. “Modern Korean Artists” and “Masters of Traditional Korean Handicrafts,” two Foundation publications based on selected articles from Koreana, which were displayed on a separate stand, caught the eye of many visitors. About 1,000 event visitors stopped by at the Korea Foundation booth during the book fair’s five-day run. Out of curiosity, the visitors would leaf through the publications on display, ask questions about the items, and view the videos produced or supported by the Foundation.

Public Interaction
Foreign publishers also showed notable interest in the Foundation’s publication support programs and various exchange programs. Of particular note, a larger number of Korean visitors and French publishers visited the Foundation’s booth than in previous years, thanks in part to its central location, nearby the exhibition hall entrance and adjacent to the pavilion area for the Guest of Honor. It is also encouraging that the sale/subscription of the Foundation’s books and periodicals showed an increase from the previous year.

Based on its previous participation in this book fair, the Foundation was able to improve on the booth’s installation, as well as the effectiveness of the display items and publicity efforts. In 2010, the Foundation will also participate in world-famous international book fairs, such as the Tokyo International Book Fair and Frankfurt Book Fair, for added exposure of its media content and support programs.
