Making Dancheong Pencil Cases with Young Cancer Patients

A Korean Culture Class for young children with cancer was held at Insa Art Plaza, in Gwanhun-dong, on May 25, 2013. Fifteen foreign volunteers from eleven countries were paired up with children to make pencil cases decorated with the multicolored traditional pattern known as dancheong. Lim Young-ju, the director of the Korea Dancheong Pattern Research Institute, explained the significance of dancheong, while the foreign volunteers brought materials from various countries to introduce the children to world cultures. Bang Jinwoo, 12, who was teamed up with a German volunteer, Jan Behrens, said that he really enjoyed the day’s activity and that he would like to visit Germany when he grows up to see Behrens again.
