2014 Korea Festival in Eurasia: Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

The Korea Festival is a multifaceted cultural event that promotes the culture of Korea through the staging of such events as exhibitions, performances, special lectures on Korean Studies, workshops on Korean-language instruction, and corporate social responsibility initiatives. This year's festival program is being presented from May through August 2014 in the countries of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Following the first program held in Brazil in 2012, the Korea Festival enjoyed another successful showing in 2013 in six of ASEAN's member countries (Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).

'Arirang Road' Touring Exhibition

The "Arirang Road" touring exhibition, organized by the National Folk Museum of Korea and featuring Korea's most representative folk song "Arirang," is to be presented in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as part of the Korea Foundation's Korea Festival program in Eurasia. The exhibition will introduce Kazakh and Uzbek audiences to the background of "Arirang" and various "Arirang"-related aspects that can still be found in the everyday life of people in Korea.

Jazz, Fusion Gugak and Korean Traditional Music and Dance Performances

A concert to present Korean traditional music and dance will be held in Uzbekistan, while the residents of Kazakhstan will be treated to jazz and fusion gugak concerts, featuring the haegeum, a traditional Korean instrument.

Workshop on Korean-language Instruction

In cooperation with the Korea Foundation Volunteer Network and Korean Education Center in Almaty, the Korea Foundation is extending assistance to a workshop on Korean-language instruction for Korean-language educators in Kazakhstan. The workshop program, which includes lectures on classroom teaching methods and Korean culture experiences, is intended to help local educators improve the quality of their Korean-language courses for students in Kazakhstan.

2014 KF Lecture Series in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan

The 2014 KF Lecture Series will be conducted at six leading university institutions of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, during the period of May 6-16, 2014, as an effort to advance the Korean Studies discipline and promote friendship and cooperative relations with the two Eurasian countries. Related to such themes as the economic and political development of Korea, as well as its education and culture, the first lecture session will be held on May 6 at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) and then be continued at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies and State Pedagogical University named after Nizami in Tashkent, Eurasian National University in Astana, and Kazakh National University and University of International Relations and World Languages in Almaty. The KF Lecture Series has proven to be an effective initiative to broaden local interest in and understanding of Korea, especially in regard to helping Korean Studies to take root in regions where Korea-related education is still in its early stages of development.
