To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the KF Gallery presents MA:T 맛: Korean Culture Beyond the Recipe, a special exhibition that highlights the everyday aesthetics and warmth of the Korean people, as expressed through its cuisine and dining culture.
The exhibition examines how Korea’s sentiments and sensibilities, which are typically analyzed through the lens of traditional culture, are manifested in the everyday lives of modern-day Koreans, including aspects that have otherwise been thought to be embarrassing or unworthy of attention. The exhibition focuses on the cuisine and dining culture of today’s Korea. In addition to the quintessential elements of contemporary Korean dining practices, including rice, kimchi, alcoholic beverages, and fooddelivery services, the exhibition delves deeper to examine Koreans’ emotional warmth and aesthetic sensibilities, an ubiquitous inclination to provide extra servings, a seemingly impromptu approach to living, and various other slices of Korean life.
The exhibition wanders outside the sphere of Korea’s commonly studied traditional cuisine and globalized dishes by reinterpreting Korea’s dining habits through a contemporary and original perspective, while the visual stimuli help viewers to reexamine the identity of Korean design.
