한국국제교류재단은 신기술 기반의 디지털 실감형 콘텐츠를 통해 보다 더 활발하게 소통하고 교류할 수 있는 디지털 공공외교 체험관, KFXR 갤러리를 개관한다.
확장현실(eXtended Reality)이라는 의미를 가진 'XR'은 사용자에게 새로운 차원의 경험과 몰입감을 제공하는 초실감형 기술을 일컫는 용어로 증강현실(AR; Augmented Reality), 가상 현실(VR; Virtual Reality), 혼합현실(MR; Mixed Reality)을 모두 아우른다. 가상을 현실처럼 체험할 수 있는 첨단 영상기술인 가상현실, 현실의 이미지나 배경에 가상 이미지를 겹쳐서 하나의 영상으로 보여주는 기술인 증강현실, 이 두 가지를 함께 활용하는 혼합현실 기술을 총망라한 초실감형 기술서비스인 것이다. 디지털 콘텐츠에 실감 기술을 적용, 인간의 오감자극을 통해 정보를 제공하여 실제와 유사한 체험을 가능하게 하는 이러한 신기술은 물리적 제약을 극복한 공감을 실현하며 국제 교류의 장을 넓히는 도구로 주목 받고 있다. 한국은 XR 기술의 핵심 인프라 중 하나인 5G 네트워크를 선도하는 국가다. 한국국제교류재단은 KFXR 갤러리를 통해 한국의 선진적인 디지털 신기술 기반을 토대로 한 인터랙티브 미디어 아트, AR, VR, MR, XR, 메타버스 등을 활용한 다양한 세계문화교류 주제의 실감형, 체험형 전시를 지속적으로 선보일 계획이다. 더불어 주한 공관 및 국내외 전문기관들과의 협력을 증진하고 참여, 공유, 개방을 실천하며 인류보편적 가치에 기여하는 디지털 상호 교류의 장을 마련하고자 한다.

The Korea Foundation (KF) has opened the KF XR Gallery to strengthen communication and exchanges with the public through the use of immersive experiences based on cutting-edge digital technologies. "XR" stands for extended reality, which refers to virtual technology that provides a new dimension of super-realistic, immersive experiences for users. It is an umbrella term that includes AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality), and MR (mixed reality). AR s an enhanced version of the real world by adding virtual elements to real-world images and environments; VR enables users to experience the virtual world as if it were the physical world; and MR merges the real and digital worlds. By adapting immersive technology to digital content, XR renders information through sensory stimulation, making it possible for users to have simulated experiences of real-world environments. It has attracted global attention as a means of broadening the scope of international exchange, one that fosters common feelings that transcend tangible limitations. Korea stands at the forefront of smart grid (SG) network development, one of the key factors for building XR infrastructure. With this advanced digital foundation in place, the KF plans to present multifaceted, immersive, and experiential exhibitions at the KF XR Gallery that foster global cultural exchanges, utilizing interactive media arts, AR, VR, MR, XR, and metaverse technologies. The KF will also promote cooperation with foreign embassies in Korea and specialized institutions at home and abroad, while enhancing participation, sharing, and openness. Moreover, the KF will formulate a digital platform for mutual exchanges that contribute to the universal values of humankind.

Pale Blue Dot - The KF XR Gallery Opening Exhibition

한국국제교류재단은 2023년 5월 15일부터 10월 27일까지 KF XR 갤러리 개관전시 < 창백한 푸른 점 >을 개최한다. 동 전시는 우리 국민과 세계 각 국민들이 신기술 기반의 디지털 실감형 콘텐츠를 통해 보다 더 활발하게 소통하고 교류할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 마련한 상설 전시 공간, KFXR 갤러리의 첫 번째 전시이다. < 창백한 푸른 점 >은 인류 보편적 가치인 '환경'을 둘러싼 논의들을 실감형 콘텐츠들로 구현한 다. 전시의 제목인 “창백한 푸른 점은 미국의 천문학자 칼 세이건(Carl Sagan,1934-1996) 이 쓴 저서의 제목에서 비롯되었다. 보이저1호가 명왕성 궤도에서 찍어 보낸 우주 광경 속 희미한 지구 사진을 본 세이건은 아래와 같이 적었다. "저 점을 다시 보세요. 저기가 바로 이곳입니다. 저것이 우리의 고향입니다. 저것이 우리입니다. 우리가 사랑하는 모든 이들, 우리가 알고 들어보았을 모든 사람들, 존재했던 모든 인류가 저 곳에서 삶을 영위했습니다. (...)저 사진은 우리가 서로 친절하게 대하고, 우리가 아는 유일한 보금자리인 창백한 푸른 점을 소중히 보존하는 것이 우리의 의무임을 강조하고 있는 것입니다."
이번 전시는 인류가 함께 살아가는 '창백한 푸른 점'에 관한 공동의 책임을 다시 한번 상기하고 '실감하는 기회를 제시하고자 한다. 기후 변화 등 급격히 변화하고 있는 현대 사회의 주요 사안과 그에 관한 예술의 역할에 관해 고찰해온 미디어아티스트 문경원&전준호 그리고 글로벌 이슈를 다루는 작가들이 공공외교라는 대주제 아래에서 환경 관련 이슈들을 다양한 관점으로 살핀다. 기후위기, 탄소 배출, 멸종 위기종 등의 최근 중요하게 다뤄지는 환경 문제는 물론 과거와 미래에 관한 거시적인 관점 그리고 첨단 과학과 탐험에 이르기까지 다양한 담론들이 AR, VR, 인터랙티브 아트 등의 실감형 콘텐츠를 통해 펼쳐진다. KFXR 갤러리 방문객들은 갤러리 개관에 맞춰 공개하는 KF 글로벌센터 메타버스도 만나볼 수 있다. 메타버스에서는 KF 글로벌센터의 다양한 사업 소개와 몰입감 높은 가상의 전시들이 펼쳐진다.

From May 15 to October 27, the KF celebrates the opening of the KF XR Gallery with an exhibition titled Pale Blue Dot, from May 15 to October 27. This inaugural exhibition introduces the new gallery as a permanent space dedicated to exhibiting immersive content that is designed to help stimulate communication and exchanges between the Korean citizens public and people around the world.
Pale Blue Dot prompts discussion about the environment, a universal value of humanity. We have borrowed the exhibition's title from Carl Sagan's (1934~1996) book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space. After seeing the Earth in a photograph taken by the Voyager 1 space probe, Sagan commented in his book: “Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. (. . .) To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
The exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on our common responsibility for planet Earth through immersive experiences. Under the overall theme of public diplomacy, new media artists Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, who have been exploring climate change and other issues related to contemporary society, as well as other artists dealing with global problems, present diverse perspectives on environment-related topics. In addition to issues such as the climate crisis, carbon emissions, and endangered species, which have been under serious discussion recently, the exhibition features immersive content that uses AR, VR, and interactive arts, to explore broad topics such as a macroscopic viewpoint about the past and the future, and cutting-edge science and exploration.
Visitors can also access the KF Global Center metaverse, which is opening along with the KF XR Gallery, to learn about the Center's wide-ranging projects and highly immersive virtual exhibitions.
