한국국제교류재단과 빌리타운의 공동주최로 개최되는 전시 《물보라를 일으켜》는 헤이그에서 활동하는 시각예술 작가 4인의 작품을 소개한다. 빌리타운은 네덜란드 헤이그에 위치한 비영리 기관으로 2003년 설립되어 유럽에서 다양한 문화 예술 사업을 전개하고 있다. 이번 전시에는 헤이그를 중심으로 국제적인 활동을 펼치고 있는 작가 샘 해쉬바흐, 아프라 에이시마, 지아지아치, 카테리나 하일이 참여해 환경과 여성, 가상현실과 실재, 우주와 인간, 시지각적 경험 등의 주제를 담은 회화, 텍스타일, 설치, 조각, 영상, 드로잉 작품을 선보인다. '바다에서 일어나는 물보라'는 부드러운 파도의 모습을 강조하는 전시의 주제어이다. 물보라는 풍랑이나 너울과 달리 긴장감이나 적개심 없이 바라볼 수 있는 자연현상이자 빛과 바람에 따라 시시각각 변하는 가볍고 투명한 물의 모습이다. 나타났다 금세 사라지더라도 끊임없이 이어지며 강한 중력에 의한 작용으로써 우리가 발 딛고 선 땅을 반추하게 만든다. 전시는 이처럼 단일한 의미 아래 무수히 다른 형태를 지닌 물의 단서를 발견할 수 있는 작품으로 구성되었다. 나아가 서로 지니고 있는 관념의 생김새가 모두 다르더라도 자연스럽게 받아들일 수 있는 개방적인 상태를 관객에게 제안하고자 한다. 해안 도시 헤이그에서 바다를 깊이 인식하며 살아가고 있는 작가들의 작품은 서울의 풍경과 만나 멀리 퍼져가는 또 다른 가능성의 파장을 만들어낸다. 샘 해쉬바흐의 회화 속 크리처는 비밀스러운 밤의 갤러리를 유영하고, 섬유로 이루어진 아프라 에이시마의 납작한 뗏목은 전시장 안에 정박한다. 지아지아치의 빛을 이용한 공간 설치 작품은 해안가의 물결을 떠오르게 하고, 카테리나 하일은 다양한 매체로 근원적인 물에 대해 질문한다. 《물보라를 일으켜》에 전시된 작품들을 통해 고정된 방식에서 벗어나 작가들의 이야기를 자유롭게 바라보고 모두 다른 속도와 형태를 지닌 각자의 물보라를 만들어낼 수 있기를 기대한다.

The Sea We Want to See is a collaborative exhibition organized by the Korea Foundation and Billytown. Billytown, a non-profit organization established in 2003 and based in The Hague, the Netherlands, is renowned for its diverse artistic and cultural ucisma. initiatives across Europe. This exhibition showcases the works of international artists Sam Hersbach, Afra 1, Jiajia Qi, and Katherina Heil, all based in The Hague. It features paintings, textiles, installations, sculptures, and drawings that explore themes such as the environment and women, the virtual and the real, the cosmos and the human, and perception and experience.
'Splashing in the sea' is the main theme of the exhibition. A splash is a natural phenomenon that can be seen without pressure or hostility, gentler than a storm or a swell, and can be seen as light, transparent water that changes with the light and wind. It It appears and disappears as quickly as it comes, yet it is constant, and its strong gravitational pull makes us reflect on the ground we stand on. The exhibition comprises works that reveal the myriad different characteristics of splashes under a single meaning. Furthermore, it aims to suggest to the viewer an open-minded state of acceptance of waves, even if they are all different.
As a coastal city deeply engaged with water, The Hague's artists' encounters with Seoul's landscape create waves of possibilities that spread far and wide. Creatures in Sam Hersbach's paintings secretly swim through the gallery at night, while Afra Eisma's raft of textiles docks nearby. Jiajia Qi's installations evoke the waves on the shore, while Katherina Heil interrogates the fundamental nature of water in a variety of media. Through the works of these artists, we hope to free viewers from fixed ways of looking at them and inspire everyone to create their own splashes, each with different speeds and forms.

  샘 해쉬바흐의 회화는 사람과 사람이 아닌 생명체, 먼 과거와 현재, 가상의 세계와 현실이 뒤섞인 다층적이고 유동적인 감각을 지닌다. 최근 그가 집중하고 있는 룸 포트레이 시리즈는 자신의 작품이 걸리게 될 전시 공간을 회화의 대상으로 삼는다. 실재하는 공간을 마치 랩탑의 스크린 속 공간처럼 인식하고, 그곳에 괴생물을 나타나게 하거나 배경을 흐트러뜨려 게임 속 장면처럼 뒤바꿈시킨다. 이러한 가벼운 전복을 통해 해쉬바흐는 실제로 경험한 전시장과 공상의 장소, 지금 자신의 작품을 바라보는 사람들의 시공을 연결시킨다.

  Sam Hersbach's paintings have a multi-layered and fluid sense of the intermingling of human and non-human life forms, the distant past and present, the fictional and the real. His recent focus, the Room-portray Series, takes the exhibition space in which his work will be displayed as the subject of his paintings. He perceives the physical space as if it were a scene on a laptop screen, transforming it into something like a video game environment by introducing monstrous creatures or disrupting the background. Through these light subversions, Hersbach creates a link between the actual exhibition space, the realm of imagination, and the time and space of the viewer.

  화려한 색감과 강렬한 이미지, 텍스타일의 부드러운 물성을 자유롭게 사용하는 것은 아프라 에이시마의 작품에서 공통적으로 나타나는 특징이다. 터프팅 기법을 주로 사용하는 그의 수공예적인 접근 방식은 전통 예술의 범위 안에 있으면서도 동시대적이다. 매체를 감각적으로 해석하는 방식과 과감한 스케일, 다양한 상징을 담고 있는 이미지들을 통해 자연스러운 작가의 언어로 만들고 있다. 한편 에이시마가 전시장에 수놓은 거대한 배의 이미지는 관람객이 기존의 평면적인 공간을 넘실대는 바다로 상상할 수 있도록 돕는다.

  Vivid colors, bold imagery, and the playful use of the soft physicality of textiles are common features of Afra Eisma's work. Primarily using tufting techniques, her handcrafted approach bridges traditional and contemporary art. Eisma's sensuous interpretation of the material, her large-scale pieces, and her imagery containing a variety of symbols create a distinctive artistic language. In the exhibition space, the image of a giant ship embroidered by Eisma invites viewers to imagine the existing flat space as an ocean flowing through it.

  지아지아치의 설치 작품을 위해 주요한 요소가 되는 것은 작품이 놓이는 공간과 환경 그리고 관람객이다. 빛의 변화와 그림자, 공간을 인식하는 시각과 촉각 등 보는 사람의 감각적인 경험을 전제로 한다는 점에서 그의 작품은 열린 상태가 된다. 방 안 가득히 하얀 물보라를 흩뿌려 놓은 듯한 <듣는 자, 먼지 속에서>(2023)의 투명한 그물에 맺힌 물의 형태들은, 관람객이 이동하며 만들어내는 미세한 움직임을 반영하며 끊임없이 일렁이는 풍경을 만들어낸다.

  For Jiajia Qi's installations, the main elements are the space and environment in which the work is placed and the viewer. Her works are open-ended, inviting the viewer's multi-sensory experience of light and shadow, and the visual and tactile perception of space. In Who Listens, At Dust(2023), the water forms with the transparent netting appear to scatter white splashes throughout the room, creating a constantly shifting landscape that reflects the subtle movements of the viewer as they pass through,

  조각과, 설치, 영상, 드로잉 등 다양한 매체를 다루는 카테리나 하일의 작품은 광활한 우주에서 생명을 감지하게 하는 근원적인 물을 떠오르게 한다. 그에게 우주란 막연하고 추상적인 개념이 아닌, 인간의 신체와 정신에 영향을 주고받 는 매일의 환경에 가까운 것이다. 사람의 손바닥 안에 운석이 담겨 있는 모습 이나 인공위성 드로잉, 영상 <거의>(2019)에서 중력과 인간의 몸을 구성하고 있는 물질에 대한 내레이션 등 천체와 인간에 대한 하일의 관계적인 시선은 응축된 시각언어로 드러난다.

  Katerina Heil's work in a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, video, and drawing, evokes the underlying waters that make us perceive life in the cosmic vastness. For Heil, space is not an abstract and distant concept, but rather an everyday environment that affects and influences the human body and mind. Whether it is a meteorite in the palm of a human hand, drawings of orbiters, or a narration of gravity and the materials that compose the human body in the video Almost(2019), Heil's relational view of the cosmos and humanity is revealed through a condensed visual language.
